Tucked away in the bustling neighborhood of SoHo, a thoughtfully designed 2,000-square-foot loft has emerged blending modern elegance and playful charm. With three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a home office, this residence encapsulates the vision of its Dutch and Finnish owners, who sought to combine their European roots with the vibrant spirit of New York City.
The journey to this transformation began serendipitously after buying the property when the clients discovered a magazine feature showcasing Ghislaine Viñas’s distinctive design work in the same exact apartment. Her mastery of color, paired with her Dutch heritage, resonated deeply with them. Collaborating with Alexander Butler | Design Services, the architectural enhancements and interior detailing were guided by the couple’s desire for a space that felt simultaneously luxurious, comfortable, and reflective of their Nordic and Dutch influences.
Throughout the loft, a predominantly white color scheme provides a canvas for an exploration of texture and form. In the primary bedroom, painted white brick walls complement cozy wool chairs and a ceiling adorned with ornate tin detailing. The addition of a playful yet sophisticated light fixture ties the elements together, creating a serene retreat. The living area echoes this approach, with sumptuous materials like Mongolian wool pillows and a shag carpet adding layers of tactile comfort.
Given the apartment’s limited natural sunlight, the design team leaned into white and cream tones to cultivate an airy, light-filled atmosphere. This thoughtful palette enhances the sense of openness, while carefully curated accents inject personality and whimsy. Sculptural details, such as a Seletti nose sculpture in the hallway and Ingo Maurer’s feathered light bulb chandeliers above the dining table, reveal the clients’ penchant for humor and the unexpected. The space also features an Uncle Scrooge Gold Chrome duck sculpture by Leblon Delienne and a striking Marco Grassi piece, “Ambra,” which infuses the dining area with a golden warmth.
The home office is a standout feature, enlivened by a vibrant jungle-themed wallpaper from Timorous Beasties. The dynamic design is balanced by soft green chairs from Swedish brand Hem, which echo the couple’s preference for bold yet soothing elements. In the TV room, black-and-white celebrity portraits create a striking visual narrative, transforming the space into a gallery-like enclave.
Art plays a central role throughout the home, each piece chosen to evoke emotion and elevate the ambiance. The bedroom prominently showcases a portrait of Kate Moss with angel wings, a work by SN that is both provocative and serene. In the primary bathroom, marble surfaces meet the intricate “Equinoxe Wallpaper” by Finnish designer Klaus Haapaniemi & Co., blending refinement with a touch of joyfulness.
